Collaboratory 1 was held at the University of Aberdeen, 14-15 July, 2016.

Thursday 14 July

10.00 – 11.00 Welcome and introductions. Overview of the network from the co-investigators. Each participant to briefly introduce themselves and their humour-related projects and activities.

11.00 – 11.30 Coffee break

11.30 – 12.00 Plenary talk: Jessica Milner Davis – ‘Humour’ – The etymology and history of the word ‘humour’ and its use

12.00 – 1.00 Small group discussion of ‘humour’ in our individual research contexts followed by feedback and general discussion. Issues to consider: How useful is the category ‘humour’ in the context of your research project/s? In your research context, what is included in the category and what is not? Why? How do the answers compare with other people working in a different context?

1.00 – 2.00 Lunch

2.00 – 2.45 Plenary talk: Graeme Ritchie – The General Theory of Verbal Humour: A critical view. Including questions and discussion

2.45 – 3.30 Plenary talk: Will Noonan – Previous approaches to humours of the past. Including questions and discussion

3.30 – 4.00 Coffee break

4.00 – 5.15 Small group discussion of prepared individual case studies followed by feedback and general discussion. Issues to consider: what theoretical approaches are relevant and (or) irrelevant in your research context? Why? What methodological issues more generally do you face? What are the similarities / differences in relation to others?                                          

Friday 15 July – Humours of the Past in the Present

Workshop papers of approx. 20 mins to allow time for questions and discussion, on the HOP Network’s four impact and engagement themes.
